I need this reg exp example you provided to also accept "OR a colon" on the
left side only.

This seems to work:
mysql> SELECT 'The West and a Western South-westerly Revolt' REGEXP
mysql> BINARY
'[[:<:]]West[[:>:]]' as matches;
